Day trip to Cuenca
Toledo, Segovia and Ávila are historic cities on a hill. Cuenca is wedged into a gorge between two rivers, the Júcar and the Huécar, and the old town stands on a rocky spur above them — which is why the houses seem to hang. It is a World Heritage site, and a landscape unlike anything on the other day trips.
It is 165 kilometres away, about two hours each way, so the day runs to eight hours with four of them on the road. What makes it comfortable is the car: the old town is very steep, steeper than Toledo, and with a driver you can be taken to the top and walk down, which is the easy direction. Your driver provides transport only, waits at agreed points and keeps the day on time.
In Cuenca you choose where to go and how long to stay: the Hanging Houses and the San Pablo bridge, the Plaza Mayor and the cathedral — one of the first Gothic cathedrals in Spain — the Huécar gorge viewpoint, or the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art, which is inside the Hanging Houses themselves. The Ciudad Encantada rock formations are half an hour further on and do not fit in eight hours; ask and we will quote a longer day.
