Toledo and Consuegra: Don Quixote's windmills in one day

How to combine Toledo with the windmills of Consuegra in an eight-hour day, and why the afternoon light matters for the photographs.

Panoramic view of Toledo above the river Tagus

The windmills of Consuegra are the image many people carry in their head when they think of La Mancha, even without knowing the name of the village. Twelve white mills in a row along a ridge, a castle beside them, and the plain stretching out in every direction.

They are 45 minutes from Toledo, which makes them the natural second stop of a day trip.

How the day divides

Time What
08:00 Pickup in Madrid
09:00 Toledo: cathedral and Jewish Quarter
12:15 Departure for Consuegra, with a light lunch on the way
13:00 Windmills and castle
14:20 Departure for Madrid
16:00 Arrival in Madrid

A good three hours in Toledo, an hour and twenty in Consuegra and three hours twenty of driving: Madrid to Toledo is 73 kilometres, Toledo to Consuegra 64, and the run home from Consuegra 133, which is a long hour and a half. Consuegra works well in that time, because what you do is climb the ridge, walk the line of mills and take in the view.

Why the order matters

Toledo first, Consuegra second.

Toledo in the morning avoids the worst of the summer heat and the crowds in the old town. The side light that makes the white mills stand out against the sky comes late in the afternoon: at midday, with the sun overhead, the photograph falls flat. Reaching the mills in that light means stretching the day by two or three hours and driving home after dark — tell us if that is the day you want and we will price it before you book.

In winter it gets tighter because darkness comes early, so everything shifts an hour earlier.

What else is at Consuegra

La Muela castle, twelfth century, sits right beside the mills and can be visited. From the top you see the whole Manchegan plain, a landscape that impresses by sheer scale.

Some mills can be visited inside, with the original grain-milling machinery. Worth the ten minutes.

And if you come between late October and early November, you will coincide with the saffron harvest and the Saffron Rose Festival. The fields fill with purple flowers and the village comes alive.

The numbers

Eight hours and €519 for the whole car, up to four passengers — €130 each if there are four of you.

Toledo alone is six hours and €349. For €170 more and two extra hours you add a landscape with nothing in common with it.

Who it suits

Anyone who already knows they want Toledo but would like the day to have two distinct acts. It also works particularly well with children: after three hours of historic streets, running around a ridge full of windmills transforms the mood.

The hours can be extended

You set the length of the day. If you want more time — a long lunch, an extra stop, staying for the sunset — tell us how many hours and we will price it before you book. We also run durations other than the ones listed, and routes built from scratch: just ask and we will quote it.
