Cuenca from Madrid: worth it when it is that far?

Cuenca is the day trip most people rule out on distance and most people recommend after doing it. It is 165 kilometres away, about two hours each way, so the full day runs eight hours with four of them on the road.

Here is what to know before deciding.

Why it is different

Toledo, Segovia and Ávila are historic cities on a hill. Cuenca is a city wedged into a gorge, between two rivers that have carved ravines out of the rock. The old town sits on a rocky spur, which is why the houses appear to hang.

It is not a variation on the same plan. It is a landscape unlike anything you will see on the others.

What fits into four hours

The Hanging Houses and the San Pablo bridge. The classic photo is taken from the bridge, not from the houses. Crossing it is mildly vertiginous and part of the fun.

The old town and Plaza Mayor. Uphill, cobbled, with the cathedral presiding over it. Cuenca’s cathedral is among the earliest Gothic buildings in Spain and is worth going inside.

The Huécar gorge. A walk along the viewpoint, or down into the gorge, depending on appetite and knees.

The Museum of Spanish Abstract Art, if twentieth-century art interests you. It is inside the Hanging Houses, which conveniently solves two visits at once.

What does not fit

La Ciudad Encantada, the set of weathered rock formations, is another half hour beyond Cuenca. It does not fit in eight hours. If it appeals, the day needs to be longer.

The practical detail that matters

Cuenca’s old town is very steep. More so than Toledo. There is a public lift and a local bus that climb, but it is worth knowing beforehand: this is not a trip for delicate knees.

With a driver waiting it changes, because you can go up by car and walk down, which is the comfortable direction.

The numbers

Eight hours and €600 for the whole car, up to four passengers — €150 each if there are four of you.

It is the longest-distance day trip we run, which explains the price. For comparison, Toledo is six hours and €350.

So, is it worth it?

If this is your first time in Madrid and you will only do one excursion, no: do Toledo or Segovia, which are closer and more complete for a first visit.

If you already know the classics, or if landscape appeals to you more than monuments, Cuenca is the one that will surprise you most.
